ON THEIR return to home soil last Saturday, Watchet Town’s frailties were ruthlessly exposed by an energetic Stockwood Green side, who dealt them a 5-1 hammering in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League.
Playing at an invitingly dried out Memorial Ground pitch for only the second time in 2026, Watchet were severely punished for some inept defending at the beginning and end of the game, despite the visitors being reduced to ten men in the first half.
The opening five minutes gave little hint of what was to follow in the next ten when Watchet contrived to concede three avoidable goals.
After losing possession near halfway Watchet were exposed as Jack Harding was rounded for the first and then a corner was only half-cleared for an instinctive jab into the net for number two.
A third goal soon followed when Watchet’s back line was outpaced for a low cross to be touched home before a Stockwood player was shown a red card for a rash challenge on Braden Taylor.
The Red & Blacks rallied for Billy Jones to break free on the right and he delivered into the goalmouth for Todd Willis to turn in their first goal since November 29. Jones then engineered space for a shot inside the box which was safely held by the keeper as it remained 1-3 at the interval.
Despite never being able to make their extra man count Watchet stayed in with a chance until the last five minutes when individual clangers saw them let in two more goals, one of them being an angled finish which rocketed into the far top corner of the net.
