PORLOCK’S hopes of winning the Premier Division title in the Taunton Saturday Football League were dashed when they lost 1-0 away to new champions Wembdon.
With the conditions not at the best and the wind playing a massive part, the game started with the hosts having the wind to their advantage,. Porlock adjusted to the conditions very well and with sweeper keeper Darren Sherring mopping up the majority of Wembdon’s balls over the defensive back line.
Half way through the first session a rare slip up Wembdon let Caleb Laney snatch the ball and drive into the penalty box before releasing a shot which narrowly missed the far corner.
Wembdon then started to make use of their wind advantage, pinning the Porlock side in their own half and making them deal with wave after wave of attack. With ten minutes to go in the first half a Wembdon ball was whipped towards the Porlock back line, the home striker controlled the ball on his chest and then fired a strike goal wards. Sherring saved the ball but unfortunately couldn’t turn it to safety and the winger put the home side ahead.
The second half was very similar to the first with Porlock having the wind advantage and again pinning the home side in their half with a barrage of attacks. Despite their relentless pressure, however, the home side managed to stay strong and see out the game to claim a valuable three points.
This result puts an end to Porlock’s title hopes as Wembdon can no longer be caught by the Robins.
