PORLOCK pulled off a great 2-1 home win over champions and league leaders Galmington in the Premier Division of the Centregreat Taunton & District Saturday Football League at the Rec, in what turned out to be a classic grassroots game of football played on a soft wet pitch.
With the hosts on the hunt to get back into the chasing pack six points adrift from their counterparts they knew that they faced a stern test.
Porlock came come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders, and early on in the game Jari High broke through the Galmington defence before he was challenged and the ball was cleared to safety.
Moments later a free kick was awarded which High stepped up for and beat the wall, but the keeper was alert to the shot and tipped it around the post.
The Porlock midfield trio of Cody Truscott, Ollie Morris and Braden Taylor seemed to have the key to unlocking the Galmington defence and were releasing the front three of Caleb Laney, Finley Priddle and High at their will. With the Porlock squad ticking it was only a matter of time before a goal was coming and when it did it resulted from a sloppy back pass that was latched on to by winger Priddle who weaved his way through and curled the ball in to the far side of the Galmington goal putting the home side 1-0 ahead.
Porlock continued to trouble the Galmington back line. Caleb Laney had a chance as he picked up on a defensive error and attempted to turn provider as he squared the ball to Morris who was waiting unmarked in the opposition’s six yard box. Somehow however the Galmington defender managed to keep the ball out of the net to make sure the teams went in at their half way point with Porlock leading 1-0.
The second half was a very different story as Galmington started to adjust to the conditions at Porlock and the game had become more of an even battle. It was Galmington who struck first after the interval. As the Porlock back line were retreating from a throw in the Galmington midfielder raced forward and somehow evaded multiple challenges to go one on one with ‘keeper Connor Paterson and slotted it past the home goalkeeper.
Porlock showed great character as they did not give in to Galmington who were growing in to the game and creating more and more pressure - they carried on playing some brilliant football.
The game remained all square until the 80th minute when dead-ball specialist High stepped up and delivered a wonderful free kick into the back post where young striker Laney had got up the highest and headed the ball into the back of the net to put Porlock back ahead once again.
With legs starting to wilt, Porlock manager James Griffiths introduced some fresh subs who tightened the defensive line for the final ten minutes of the match to secure all three points.
This was a great result and moves Porlock to within six points of the new league leaders Wembdon.
Porlock’s starting line-up: Connor Paterson, Zac Brown, Chris James (C) Harry Kivell, Declan Paterson, Cody Truscott, Ollie Morris, Braden Taylor, Jari High, Finley Priddle, Caleb Laney. Substitutes (all used): Oliver Heathfield, Ryan Parsons, Mike Mullen, Lewis Goodrum.
