MINEHEAD Women gained a 1-0 home win over Wincanton Ladies in Division Two of the Somerset Women’s Football League despite injuries and unavailability meaning they fielded only ten players.
The first half largely belonged to The Blues, with Emeral terrorising the Wincanton defence. Emeral, was unfortunate not to open to the scoring after her fierce shot rattled the post.
Ater a multitude of half-chances a ball fell to Jaz who guided the ball underneath the crossbar to give her team a 1-0 lead at half time.
Following the half-time team talk, Minehead knew they were now in control of the contest; they could dictate proceedings. Good game management prevailed as The Blues kept the pitch big, particularly finding winger Mabel, who was always giving her team a much-needed outlet. Minehead had some fantastic chances but couldn’t find the net again.
The visitors kept working hard and were always a threat on the counter. For effectively the entire game, the defensive unit of Darcy, Courtney, Alana, Erin, and debutant Toni kept Wincanton at bay.
The togetherness among these players kept things controlled…except from a single occasion where keeper Hannah was caught in a mix-up; the ball kindly fell to the Wincanton striker, who struck brilliantly. Hannah, backtracking, pulled off an unbelievable diving save! Relief for The Blues, who went into the final third still in the ascendancy.
The final third epitomised everything that last week wasn’t. The togetherness, camaraderie and determination to work together saw Minehead through. There was even time for Kianna to attempt a worldie which agonisingly crashed against the post! This would’ve been the cherry on top of a fine, fine team performance.
The whistle sounded soon after, the 10 women of Minehead had pulled off a memorable team win.
The Blues’ are back at The Rec this coming weekend as they face Portishead Ladies.
