MINEHEAD Blues signed off their season in Division Two of the Under 12 section in the Taunton Youth League in style with a deserved 2-0 home victory over Bridgwater Wolves.

Running out a full squad for their final game of the campaign, Minehead started brightly and dominated much of the first half, keeping play largely inside the Bridgwater half. Midfielders Rory and Leon were heavily involved throughout, while forward Finley dazzled with some impressive footwork to create several promising chances.

Despite the pressure, the Bridgwater goalkeeper stood firm to keep the scores level. Substitute striker Jack also came close with a headed opportunity, but Minehead were unable to find the breakthrough before the interval.

At the other end, Bridgwater produced a couple of dangerous moments, only to be denied by Minehead keeper Lou. First, he raced off his line to clear the ball just before a Wolves forward could connect, before later producing an outstanding reaction save.

The sides went into half-time locked at 0-0. Bridgwater emerged strongly after the restart and threatened early on with two free kicks in quick succession, but Minehead’s defence stayed composed.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 38th minute. Midfielder Rory struck from long range, and although the Bridgwater keeper got hands to the effort, he could not keep the ball out.

Buoyed by the goal, Minehead continued to create the better chances. Jack tested the goalkeeper again with a powerful long-range effort that had to be tipped over the bar, while substitute Alfie caused constant problems for the Bridgwater back line with his pace and energy after coming on with fresh legs.

Bridgwater continued to battle and produced occasional attacking spells, but Minehead’s defence held strong throughout. The decisive second goal came after a handball inside the Bridgwater penalty area. Defender Buddy confidently stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty to seal victory.
