WATCHET finished their midweek fixtures with another home win last Thursday evening, beating League Knockout Cup finalists Wrington Redhill by their second 4-0 margin in three days.

After a slow start where the visitors had looked the livelier outfit, the Red and Blacks found some rhythm to run out comfortable victors in the end, with their fitness levels again an important factor.

It needed a fine save from keeper Adam Bishop in the first ten minutes to prevent his side falling behind, but it was the Wrington keeper’s turn to excel with three stops in the same home attack.

Watchet’s first meaningful raid saw Aaron Deeks denied at full length, Brandon Walsh’s follow-up attempt was parried with Watchet claiming the ball was over the line prior to a defender scrambling it towards the edge of the area where Eben Harding forced the best save of the trio from his powerfully executed first time drive.

Watchet were gradually putting their passing together and after Ben Robinson and Charley Clausen had made inroads down the right with a series of one-twos, they enjoyed a concerted spell of possession.

At the end of this the deadlock was broken, ironically from a set piece with Deeks supplying the corner kick which saw Walsh rise highest in the goalmouth to bury his header into the bottom corner of the net.

Wrington were still showing enough intent to keep Watchet occupied at the back until a second home goal arrived on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors hotly disputed a free-kick awarded for handball just outside their box and their sense of injustice was amplified when Walsh sent an unstoppable curler over the wall against the inside of a post before it nestled inside the opposite upright.

The visitors never looked the same force after this and - not for the first time recently - it was the Red and Blacks who ran the show in the second half, with the Wrington keeper distinguishing himself with an early save.

Walsh drove another free-kick narrowly over the bar and Chris Sully’s low cross into the six-yard box was hacked away by a defender as the home side took control.

The only surprise was that it took them so long to consolidate their lead, with proceedings having moved into the last quarter when a ball down the middle found Deeks escaping the attentions of his marker to draw the keeper and calmly tuck his shot wide of him.

Jamie Milton took time off from another strong defensive display to venture forward and exchange passes on the right with Sully to fire in a first-timer which had the keeper again leaping into action at the expense of a corner.

The centre back had the last word however when he reached Robinson’s free-kick ahead of the advancing keeper to nod the ball over him and send it looping gently towards the empty net to finally get his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season.
