ALCOMBE Rovers rounded off a highly successful season when they beat Bridgwater Sports 2-0 in the final of the Taunton Saturday League’s Gardner Security Trophy.
Played in front of a good sized crowd at Middlezoy, which included a coach full of supporters who had made the trip from West Somerset to support their team, the opening exchanges were well contested. Few chances were created as both teams tried to settle their nerves and get into the match.
However, it was Alcombe who broke the deadlock. Centre back Beau Winter found himself with the ball on the edge of the penalty box, he rolled the defender before he let fly with a screamer that found the bottom corner of the net.
Alcombe dominated the second-half and although they had most of the possession few chances were created. With 20 minutes to go, however, Matty Ronan made a long pass from midfield just over the full back which found Sam Harley in space. The Bridgwater Sports ‘keeper ran out but as he approached Harley coolly put the ball past him to double Alcombe’s advantage.
The last few minutes were rather edgy but having dominated the game for long periods Alcombe finished playing with confidence and their keeper only had one save to make.
Alcombe managed to keep Sports at bay for the rest of the game to run out deserved winners.
The West Somerset have enjoyed a good season and just missed out on goal difference on promotion to the Premier Division of the Saturday League.
Alcombe Rovers would like to thank everyone who has supported them this season, particularly those who made the trip to cheer the boys on in the final at Middlezoy.
Alcombe would also like to say a special thank you to their main sponsors, the Fitness Station, 4 North Road, Minehead TA24 5QW telephone 01643 705299.
