WATCHET played their first league match since beating Dundry 3-1 at home on October 31 and completed the double with a 4-0 win away to their Bristol opponents on Saturday.

On a third windswept afternoon in a row, Watchet overcame both heavy conditions and challenges to get back to winning ways with a solid all-round performance, particularly in the second half.

From the outset it was obvious the pitch would soon cut up, and the visitors’ strike force of Aaron Deeks and Tom Sparks had the big Dundry centre backs at full stretch with their twisting and turning.

Charley Clausen and Chris Sully sent dangerous low crosses into the goalmouth from opposite flanks and Deeks and Sparks both had chances before Watchet scored the goal they had been threatening around the 20 minute mark.

Matt Heywood took time out from a strong display at the back to find Sparks midway inside the home half, and he slipped a neat pass through for Brandon Walsh to take in his stride as he advanced into the area to steer the ball wide of the keeper into the corner of the net.

Sully drove inches wide and Deeks and Sparks were foiled by the keeper as Watchet’s failure to make their superiority count then led to Adam Bishop having to make a couple of smart saves to preserve their lead.

Just before the break it should have been 2-0 but after a slick move Sparks first mis-kicked and then saw his second attempt saved.

After a brief spell of promise from the home side on the resumption, it didn’t take Watchet long to consolidate their position with a second goal.

A long clearance from Heywood was latched onto by Sparks, who sped clear of pursuing defenders to sidestep the burly keeper and find the vacant net with a clinical finish.

Deeks was thwarted again by the custodian, but it was soon 3-0 when Sparks worked his way in along the byeline to tee up Sully and his first-time side-foot shot found the net through the keeper’s hands.

It was pretty much one-way traffic now and the only real problem the visitors experienced was in avoiding some dubious Dundry tackling.

Keeper Bishop was not seriously tested in the half, and after Walsh and Lewis Rogers had both gone close, Watchet added a fourth goal before the end.

The best move of the match saw the visitors turn defence into attack with Walsh finding Deeks, who then played Sully into the area and his squared pass set up Sparks for a close-range shot which the keeper managed to block, only for Deeks to swivel and ram the loose ball home with his left foot.
