SOMERSET lost their first Championship match of the season when Yorkshire triumphed on Monday afternoon by 75 runs at the end of a game the Cidermen dominated for long spells.

In the end they lost because their batters were unable to chase down the 260 runs required on the final day.

There were individual successes; opener Josh Thomas scored his maiden championship century, plus 57 second time round, Lewis Gregory took a 6-fer and 18 year old Thomas Rew made his championship debut - however in the end Somerset lost a game they could and should have won.

After being put in Yorkshire reached 124 for 3 before collapsing to 162 all out, thanks to an almost unplayable spell of bowling by Gregory who ended with figures of 16 overs, 4 maidens, 6 wickets for 43.

When Somerset replied they slipped to 35 for three before Josh Thomas and Tom Abell added 166 together, when the young opener was out for 136 which came off 155 balls and included 18 fours and one 6.

Abell made a patient 50 from 147 deliveries and Will Smeed remained unbeaten on 36 from 82 balls as Somerset were dismissed for 274,

Facing deficit of 112, Yorkshire fared much better second time and scored 371 all out which included 92 from James Wharton and 62 from Joe Root, the pair adding 123 for the third wicket. Later in the order former Somerset player Dom Bess made 40 as the last three Yorkshire wickets added 98 runs.

Needing 260 for victory Somerset were soon 21 for 3 before Thomas and Abell put on 64 following which Thomas and impressive debutant Thomas Rew, who hit 30, added 51 for the fifth wicket.

However from 136 for 4 Somerset lost their remaining six wickets for 48 runs and were all out for 184, from which they take four points.
