MINEHEAD Seconds played Street First XI in Somerset Cricket League Division Three - and gained a thrilling one-wicket victory.

Batting first Minehead were dismissed for 189 in 34 overs. Rob Spiers took two early wickets before Sam Frost came to the wicket and hit 129, when he was dismissed by Sam Cobb.

Spiers ended with 2 for 38, Brendon Rawle 2 for 35 while young Sam Cobb was the pick of the attack, claiming 3 for 8 from his four overs, one of which was a maiden.

When Minehead batted they, too, found runs hard to come by but thanks to top scorer Matt Sully with 40, 34 from Rawle, and 27 by Braden Taylor the Pirates needed one run to win with their final pair of batters, 14 year olds Ben Cobb and Josh Dyer at the wicket, who held their nerve to see their side home to victory off the first ball of the 38th over.

Minehead A maintained their winning run in Division 3 of their West Somerset Cricket League when they beat their nearest challengers and neighbours Carhampton byseven wickets.

After being asked to bat opener Paul Keel gave Carhampton a good start with a brisk 24, but then wickets tumbled until the ever reliable Matt Long, who made 54 with 12 four, helped see the score to 143 before they were all out in the 33rd over.

The bowler doing the damage was Sreejinath Anilkumar who returned the impressive figures of 5 for 24 from his nine overs.

When Minehead responded they lost the wicket of captain Steve Archer early on before Gifto Varghese Pulikoltil, with an unbeaten 60, and Althaf Navas made 33 to take their side close to victory after which it was left to Finlay Penny with an unbeaten 26 to take the side to 144 in the 26th over and victory by seven wickets.

Meanwhile Minehead A continued their successful season when they beat Over Stowey First XI by two wickets to reach the next round of the West Somerset Cricket League Cup.

After being put into bat the visitors posted 114 for 9 from their 20 overs, young Josh Dyer taking 5 for 19 from his four overs, while Sreejith Anilkumar claimed 2 for 43.

When Minehead replied they found runs hard to come by and were in trouble at 28 for 3. However while wickets continued to fall at regular intervals skipper Steve Archer stayed at the crease and came to the rescue with an unbeaten 48 off 41 balls with seven 4s to see the hosts 115 for 8 in the final over. In the next round Minehead A are at home to Stoke St Mary Seconds.

Minehead Firsts are out of the Baker Cup Davies Bishop Trophy after they were lost out against Middlezoy away last week in a close encounter.
