A World of Adventure at Minehead Care Home

Residents at Minehead Care Home in Periton, Minehead, have been enjoying a taste of international travel as the home’s Bon Voyage Club takes them on a different cultural adventure every month.
From Greek crafts and Chinese celebrations to Mexican mocktails and Italian cheese tasting, the popular initiative has brought the sights, sounds, flavours and traditions of countries around the world into the home.
The travelling adventure began in January, when Greece was the first destination. Residents embraced the Mediterranean theme by decorating traditional Greek vases.
February saw the Bon Voyage Club head to China, where residents worked together on a colourful collage celebrating the Year of the Horse, and enjoyed a wonderful and varied Chinese menu.
The following month, residents were off to Ireland. A lively and competitive game of Irish carpet bowling proved a particular highlight, while residents also produced vibrant artwork inspired by the Emerald Isle.
In April, the group travelled Down Under. Residents enjoyed an Aussie barbecue, produced a spectacular Great Barrier Reef group collage and even hosted the Minehead Bushtucker trials.
May brought the sights and flavours of Mexico to Minehead. Residents made their own alcohol-free margaritas before creating their very own Mexican wave within the home.
Sweden was the next stop, with the catering team preparing an impressive traditional Swedish lunch. Residents tucked into Swedish meatballs, beetroot and cucumber salad, followed by a delicious princess cake trifle. Entertainment was provided with a brilliant ABBA karaoke session.
For the American leg of the journey in July residents made their own Mickey Mouse ears, enjoyed mac and cheese and hot dogs, and shared memories of holidays they had taken across the Atlantic.
In August, it was time for Italy, and food was naturally at the heart of the experience. Residents enjoyed a cheese tasting accompanied by a glass of prosecco.
Louise Hepenstall, care home manager at Minehead, said: “The Bon Voyage Club has been a wonderful way of bringing different cultures and experiences into the home. It has created lots of happy, new memories.”
One resident said: “Every month brings something new to look forward to, we’ve just been to the Philippines and can’t wait to find out where our next adventure will be.”
