A WIVELISCOMBE group held a celebration of solar power and issued a call for clean energy last Saturday as part of a national week of action by the Climate Coalition.

Members of Wivey Action on Climate, which is affiliated to the coalition along with other organisations of all sizes, gathered in the town at Paddocks Nursery and Children’s Centre, which has 123 community-owned solar panels on the roof.

“Our community has shown how quickly renewable energy can be developed to meet our needs – over the year our solar power generates the equivalent of nearly 60 per cent of the domestic electricity used in the town,” said group chairman Patricia Robertson.

“We have 13,479 solar panels in Wiveliscombe, mostly installed over the last five years. They are on 70 local roofs, including both schools, and there is also a small solar farm hidden away on the edge of town.”

Now Wivey Action on Climate has contacted Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow to ask for her support.

The gathering was held to support a national week of action by the Climate Coalition to call for 100 per cent clean energy within a generation.

“This is 100 per cent possible, and essential to avoid ever-worsening effects of climate change,” said Patricia.
