SWIMMERS are being challenged to swim more than 31 miles, or 50,000 metres, in three months, to raise funds for the town’s outdoor pool.

It equates to 1,927 lengths of the 27-metre pool, one of the oldest in Somerset, having been opened in 1927.

Wivey Pool has launched a ‘1927 challenge’ to support £250,000 plans to build a new pool house and ‘keep Wivey swimming’ for another 100 years.

The ‘fit for the future’ project needs to raise £60,000 by September to kick-start the revamp and allow applications for grants.

For those who find 1,927 lengths a challenge too far, the committee suggests taking on 192.7 or 19.27 lengths any time before August 31, and is offering a ‘1927 wristband’ to anybody who takes part.

A dedicated logbook is kept at the poolside for swimmers to record their challenge progress.

The committee has applied for planning permission to demolish several old sheds and build a two-storey pool house.

A spokesperson said: “It will provide a warm area for our swimmers and spectators, a room for schoolchildren to learn vital lifesaving skills, a community space, and a training area for our staff and lifeguards.

“We are applying for grants for the majority of the build cost but to cover the shortfall we need to raise £60,000.

“We are hoping our wonderful community will help.

“Whether you donate, support our other fund-raising initiatives, or help spread the word, you will be playing a part in securing Wivey Pool’s future.

“Donating ensures 100 per cent of your donation comes to the pool and you can select what you would like your money to be spent on.”

The building will include an accessible toilet which will also be available to anybody using the neighbouring recreation ground.

Donations can be made through Wivey Pool’s website.
