GUSTING winds knocked out some of the attractions at Minehead's annual fireworks extravaganza but the skies still lit up above the seaside town.

The festival, organised by holiday giant Butlins and now in its third year, attracted thousands of spectators who watched the night sky explode into colour last Thursday.

But West Somerset Council's plans to host a market featuring arts, crafts and other products from local businesses and community groups had to be abandoned due to the weather.

Council spokesman Stacey Beaumont said: "Due to gusting winds and the weather-prone position of tents on the seafront, after a site visit and with winds predicted for the evening, the market stalls had to be cancelled."

However, the event managed to go with more than one whoop and a bang and crowds were still able to enjoy Butlins' funfair and other attractions before the highlight of the evening - the impressive fireworks.

Butlins resort director Julian Highfield said the festival was aimed at providing some traditional family fun.

"It's not only a great night out for the community but also for our guests and seems to go from strength to strength every year," he said.
