WILLITON Methodist Church, which is temporarily closed for roof repairs, is having a window display throughout May in the parish council office in a bid to rekindle people’s memories – and remind them that the church is still active. The display, in the office in Killick Way, shows a number of photographs and some artefacts from the church’s history in the town, since it was established in 1883. Now it is calling on local people to see if they can identify themselves in any of the more modern photographs, or among names on the ‘cradle rolls’ – tablets recording who was christened. “We would love to share people’s memories, either if they talk to one of our members or put it in writing,” said Mollie Brooks, a preacher in the area and a steward at the Williton church. “We have photographs of the mothers and toddlers, our 1984 celebration of John Wesley’s 150th anniversary and there would have been a number of Sunday School children there, or people might know someone christened who’s on the rolls.” Organisers are holding a coffee morning on June 2 in the parish council rooms to encourage people who would like to have a look at the photos or share their memories. Although the church is currently closed due to storm damage, members are keen to make it known they are still active and meet for services at St Peter’s Rectory on Sundays at 10.30am, as well as for regular Friday coffee mornings. “We welcome everyone and anyone who would like to join us there – we are very anxious that people in the village should not think we have closed down,” said church member Jane Sefton. Mollie said there were concerns that repairing the church roof, estimated at over £120,000, could prove too expensive for the congregation and it may have to be sold.
