A FARMER who planted two and a half acres with wildflowers is the happy creator of Stogumber’s first crop circle – and has given a great boost in the process to local wildlife and people.

Ken Sellick, who has farmed in the area all his life, as did his father before him, harvested and dried thousands of wildflower seeds he grew last year as an extension to his garden.

When the wheat crop he planted at the end of last winter in one of his fields got eaten by slugs and rabbits, he thought of replanting.

But he decided instead to sow all the flower seeds and create a spectacular display.

“I thought if I can put a bit back into the environment, and people in the village enjoy it, I’m happy.

“I put a small note in the parish magazine and put up a few posters locally, made a patch with my tractor in the shape of a spiral – and we had the first ever Stogumber crop circle!”

Then the news went viral and Ken was amazed how many people came to see the flowers in their spectacular setting, some returning many times.

He selected five annual cornfield varieties – cornflowers, corn marigolds, corn cockle, corn chamomile and corn poppies.
