SIR — The residents of Watchet who use the foot crossing at Goviers Lane will have noted that we have tied back the gates protecting access to the railway line to give freer access.
This will apply while the line is presently closed to regular passenger trains, until Saturday February 19, although pedestrians should as always be aware that engineering department trains can be moving at any time as work requires and should take suitable precautions when crossing.
The situation regarding the gates is being actively reviewed by the West Somerset Railway and we are continuing to hold discussions between our management, our engineers and local residents.
We are planning to review a number of options and agree a permanent solution to make access easier for those who find them difficult to negotiate, while maintaining the necessary levels of safety for all users.
