Division One

Huish Champflower v Brompton Ralph

AN unbeaten 126 from Shaun Lee set Brompton Ralph on the road to a 47-run win at Huish Champflower on Saturday.

Brompton were put in and lost Tom Gill for only 5, but a 60-run stand for the second wicket followed between Paul Poole (31) and Lee.

Shaun then shared a stand of 76 for the third wicket with his father John as they took the score to 149 off 25 overs.

He remained undefeated at the end, with Brompton's last wicket falling off the final ball of their 40 overs with the total on 254, Bill Buckingham and Dave Pursey taking three wickets each.

In reply, Huish lost the key wicket of Dave Buckingham for three with the score on four, but Mike Kidner and Philip Buckingham put on 110 for the second wicket before Buckingham went for 66, leaving the game evenly poised with Huish on 114-2 after 22 overs.

However, James Escott and Chris Hale were the only other batsmen to reach double figures as Huish closed on 207 with Kidner carrying his bat for 65no.

John Lee took 4-49, Charlie Welch 3-41 and Cavan Takle 3-48.

Timberscombe v

Over Stowey

STRONG batting by Timberscombe secured a 45-run win at home to Over Stowey on Saturday.

Put in on a good firm wicket, the loss of two early wickets made little difference to Timberscombe's progress as the runs were piled on.

Adrian Priddle led the early scoring with 53, followed by Paul Keal (72no) and James McGuinness (43).

Only Phil Rich's steady swing bowling escaped the onslaught, his 12 overs costing just 31 runs, as the hosts reached 219-4.

In reply, Stowey were kept in check by the accurate bowling of Vince Scott and Gary Thorpe.

With the introduction of spinner Nick Virgin the batsmen tried to accelerate but wickets started to fall.

With some superb fielding backing up the bowlers, Stowey had to be content with a 174-9 total, Virgin taking 5-50 from his 12 overs.

Timberscombe: 219-4 (P Keal 72no, A Priddle 53, J McGuinness 43).

Over Stowey: 174-9 (B Buller 57, N Virgin 5-50, V Scott 3-47).

Points: Timberscombe 25 Over Stowey 7.

Stoodleigh v

Timberscombe

THE previous Saturday saw Timberscombe finally win a toss but that couldn't save them from a 29-run defeat by title favourites Stoodleigh.

Put in, Stoodleigh got off to a flying start with Gary Rowe (50) scoring freely against some inaccurate bowling.

When he fell with the total on 62, Timberscombe tightened up their bowling with Nick Virgin taking 3-36 and Stoodleigh were dismissed for 179.

In reply, Timberscombe were soon in trouble and at 55-5 all seemed lost.

There was some hope while opener Ian Goodrum (55) was still there, but his demise saw the run rate rise steadily and the visitors were all out for 150 in the 39th over, A Pengelly taking 5-32.

Stoodleigh: 179 (G Rowe 50, K Godfrey 4-64, N Virgin 3-36).

Timberscombe: 150 (I Goodrum 55, A Pengelly 5-32, W Miller 3-35).

Points: Stoodleigh 26 Timberscombe 10.

Roadwater v

Crowcombe

ROADWATER crushed old rivals Crowcombe by 143 runs at home on Saturday after a blistering display by their batsmen.

Put in to bat, they amassed 249-5 - believed to be the highest league score on the ground.

Ben Bowman ensured a steady start and he and David Hill took the score to 94-1 at the halfway stage.

His wicket saw Ben Brewer arrive to share in an impressive stand of 124 off 15 overs. Hill (78) was at his imposing best and Brewer (76no) played some textbook shots as they put the game beyond the visitors.

Crowcombe's reply floundered at the hands of Bowman, the only bowler on the day to go for less than five an over. He took 4-23 from ten overs and once Chris Yianni dismissed Martin Baker for a quickfire 25 with a stunning catch, Crowcombe subsided to 106 all out.

Roadwater: 249-5 (D Hill 78, B Brewer 76no, B Bowman 43, S Bailey 3-57).

Crowcombe: 106 (M Baker 25, B Bowman 4-23).

Points: Roadwater 26 Crowcombe 4.

Over Stowey v

Roadwater

THE previous week saw Roadwater complete the double over Over Stowey with a three-wicket win.

Stowey were put in and M Bendall made the most of a life on the very first ball to hold the innings together with a hard-working 75.

The innings ended on 163-9 with Ben Bowman's pace and accuracy giving him five victims, all bowled on off stump.

In reply, Roadwater were coasting at 95-1, but after both Bowman and David Hill fell for 47, the unavailability of four batsmen told and they needed eighth-wicket pair Toby Brewer and Steve Cornish to put on 23 and secure the win with two overs to spare.

Over Stowey: 163-9 (M Bendall 76, A Easden 27, B Bowman 5-31).

Roadwater: 165-7 (B Bowman 47, D Hill 47, T Brewer 23no, B Buller 3-50, P Rich 2-37, C Sellick 2-48).

Points: Over Stowey 8 Roadwater 25.

Division Two

Stogumber v Exford

STOGUMBER proved too strong for Exford at home on Saturday, winning by seven wickets.

Exford won the toss and decided to bat on a good track but found the home bowlers in reasonable form, the biggest stand being that of 45 between top scorer S Webster (53) and M Sherring for the sixth wicket. Earlier, opener K Atkins had batted well and it wasn't until the 25th over that he was well caught by Simon Northcote-Green in the slips for 32.

It was Northcote-Green who brought the Exford innings to a close when he took the last five wickets for 39 runs.

Although a good score, Exford's 178 on a good pitch and fast outfield was a good performance by Stogumber's bowlers and fielders, although a couple of the older generation put down chances in the field.

Stogumber immediately made their intentions obvious with M Sherring being hit out of the attack after bowling only three overs, with Stuart Thorne in fine form.

He and Les Biffen looked solid and when they were parted in the 22nd over 112 was on the board, Biffen going for 32.

Andy Jenkins came and went for 23 but Thorne kept finding the middle of the bat and the boundaries and when he was eventually dismissed just short of victory he had amassed 105, an innings he had been threatening for some time. Victory was achieved with six overs remaining.

Exford:178 (S Webster 53, K Atkins 32, W Sherring 23, M Sherring 23, S Northcote-Green 5-39, J Rexworthy 2-39, B Penny 2-42).

Stogumber: (S Thorne 105, L Biffen 32, A Jenkins 23).

Points: Stogumber 26 Exford 6.

Allerford v Morebath

ALLERFORD overcame by visitors Morebath by 50 runs on Saturday.

Steve Howard's 71 led them to a daunting 236-6 total, with R Southey scoring 44 and good contributions from Luke Taylor and Richie Rich.

K Kingdom led the reply with 55 but Morebath's chances were wrecked by Paul Cuthbertson's 6-53 haul and they finished well short on 186-9.

Allerford: 236-6 (S Howard 71, R Southey 44, L Taylor 28, R Rich 26, D Richards 17no).

Morebath: 186-9 (K Kingdon 55, S Kelland 30, I Hyde 25, P Cuthbertson 6-53, I Cape 2-41).

They were put in but after a good first four overs, openers Larry Maxwell and Lee Baker were both bowled, and Cutcombe then lurched to 39-4.

However, Paul Lee (34) and John Matravers (30) put on 65 before the umpires failed to spot a no ball which Matravers swept to third man.

Duncan Lee made a quick 21 as the visitors closed on 159.

In reply, Crowcombe could only manage 112 as Eric Clarbull and Phil Webber took three wicket apiece.

Cutcombe: 159 (P Lee 34, John Matravers 30, D Lee 21no, R Phillips 4-36, M Lewis 3-50, J Parry 2-39).

Division Five

Brompton Ralph III v Timberscombe II

BROMPTON Ralph III powered their way to an 88-run win at home to Timberscombe II.

They elected to bat and openers Mike Wright and Bill Butcher piled on 151 before Wright was out for 56 in the 27th over.

Butcher went on to carry his bat for an excellent 171no which included 20 fours and seven sixes, and with a good supporting knock of 32no from T Acock, Brompton closed on 268-1.

In reply, Timberscombe lost Ian Snell for a duck with only one on the board, and although Bruce Lang carried his bat for 79no, only four other batsmen reached double figures.

North Newton v

Minehead A

A CLOSE finish saw Minehead A win by two wickets at North Newton on Saturday.

The home side batted first and made a solid start with A Bradford playing some good shots, and further solid contributions took them to a 153-7 total.

Minehead made a great start to their reply with Carl Clark and A Thomas putting on 73 for the first wicket.

Clark played some superb shots as he went on to make 70, and with some big hitting from N Broome and a steady knock from K Welsher the game looked to be won.

But wickets started to fall, and when two went down in the 39th over, Minehead were left needing four runs with two wickets in hand. They managed it without further loss, B Hamblin hitting the winning runs.

North Newton: 153-7 (C Cross 42, G Loxton 22, C White 21, A Bradford 18, B Tozer 18, C Clark 3-39, S Smith 2-29).
