SNOW, ice and wind caused havoc in West Somerset last week for events and individuals – and also brought out the best in people as they rallied round to cope with the unprecedented weather.

In what was the first ever Met Office red warning to be issued in the South West for snow, West Somerset saw:

* Valiant efforts to keep hospitals going and help for people needing treatment.

* Minehead Town Council roof fall in when a burst pipe unfroze.

* Hundreds of darts fans barred from a major televised tournament.

* Weddings saved, others cancelled – and much more.

Communities around the district have been highly praised for the way they came together to help each other and keep the vulnerable safe.
