SIR — I am delighted that you reported the issue of the unwillingness of the Valuation Office Agency to respond promptly - if at all - to important new activities, thereby putting them in danger.

Your front page last Friday helpfully highlighted the very pressing problems, created by the valuation office, that face the development of a new museum that may be expected to contribute to the life and economy of Watchet.

Not least because of the issues raised in your adjacent report about the future of Hinkley Point C, Watchet - and indeed much of West Somerset - desperately needs boosts to its economy, and none may be more fitting than those generated by the sort of entrepreneurial spirit displayed by Mr Wilson.

In addition to the social benefits of the new museum and the other uses planned for the former Anchor pub, the potential tourist visits can be expected to bring wider business to the town.

Whereas none of these matters may be the primary objectives of the valuation office, we should at least be able to expect a public body to conduct its affairs in ways that do not endanger socially and economically positive initiatives.

John Doling,

Anchor Street,

Watchet.
