SIR — I am writing regarding last Thursday's refusal of planning permission by West Somerset Council for the proposed improvement works at Williton Memorial Ground. As a player for both Williton FC (Saturday team) and Williton Rockets (Sunday team), our players have requested that I contact you regarding our disappointment at the decision. As a club we were very pleased when Williton Parish Council announced that there were plans to improve our changing facilities and also build a multi-use sports area at the memorial ground. We have seen other local clubs thrive from having better facilities available to them, and we are desperate to catch those clubs up and keep our long running football teams from folding. A perfect example of this is just down the road at Stogursey, where changing facilities have been brought up to standard and, with a multi sports area, they now train all year round. Their football team has thrived over the last few years and they have now set up a youth team and another Sunday team as they are able to attract new players. As a club, our chairman and our club captain are already doing some fantastic work in setting up a youth team, but we really need the facilities to push this on. We feel our views represent many of the local children as the majority of our team have grown up in Williton and have been the 'bored' kids with nothing to do. We are hopeful that the decision can successfully be appealed against. In the meantime, we like to take the opportunity to invite any new players to join us at training on Wednesday evenings at 6pm. Michael Richards, Williton Football Club.
