AN official opening has taken place for a new Repair Café being held in alternate months in Watchet.

West Quantocks Repair Café was held in Watchet Community Centre on Saturday (November 29), the second to be staged after an initial trial in September.

It was promoted by the town’s recently established Watchet Climate Group (WCG), which is part of the Climate Action Group Somerset (CAG) network.

WCG is a collection of passionate local people who have come together to ‘do something great’ in the community.

More than 15 volunteer experts from all over the local area attended the Repair Café to fix clocks, broken furniture, and household gadgets, and sharpen kitchen knives, scissors, garden secateurs, and shears.

Small electrical items such as lamps were also safely fixed and tested.

Repair Cafés aim to fix, rather than throw away, small household items free of charge, reducing landfill and minimising waste.

While waiting for their items to be repaired, people were able to chat and have a cup of tea or coffee with cakes and biscuits provided by cafés Hellikers, Chives, Watchet Marina, and East Quay Kitchen, while the Liddymore Road Co-operative store also gave tea, coffee, and milk.

The next Watchet Repair Café will be held on January 31.

Anybody who wants more information on items which can be fixed or who wants to volunteer should email [email protected] or find it on Facebook.

A CAG spokesperson said: “If it is inspiration you are after, this is a great place to start.

“The groups in the CAG Somerset network are organising an impressive range of community activities and events.

“Through community action, our network is making a significant impact on reducing waste in Somerset.

“If you would like to get involved, you can explore group profiles to better understand their work, aims, and volunteering opportunities.”
