REASSURANCES were given to Cotford St Luke residents yesterday (Thursday) that their concerns about lack of facilities in the purpose-built village were being addressed.

In a report to last night's full meeting of Taunton Deane Council, members were told the three main causes of complaint were being dealt with.

These were highlighted at a meeting last month and centred around the delay in providing facilities, the provision of a community centre and the possible development of land next to the school site.

The council's director of development, Doug McKay, told yesterday's meeting that the delay in providing certain facilities was to be regretted.

But he said officers were continuing to work with the developers to complete work on play areas, playing fields and other open spaces as soon as practicably possible.

He said there were hopes that a planning application would soon be submitted for "a shop or shops" and said the developers would be "reminded again of the desire for a public house" and asked to demonstrate that they were "actively pursuing" the idea.

He said it remained the firm belief of officers, and also the village's own community association, that a community centre would be best provided within the new school.

And he said villagers had little choice but to sacrifice their existing bowling green in order to accommodate such a centre on the site.

He told councillors little could be done about objections to development alongside the school site as the principle of development on the land had already been established.

However, concerns about the details of the development were justified and Mr MacKay said the developers had agreed to look at their plans again "with regard to the number and type if units, the location of the access road and the preservation of existing trees".

He also hoped to take up an offer from the developers to adapt an existing wooden pavilion alongside the tennis courts for storage facilities for nets and other equipment.
