THE first step in drawing up a blueprint for the future of Williton - ranked the third most deprived area in Somerset - will be taken tomorrow (Saturday).

A community-led group charged with producing a parish plan for the village will unveil a large model and map and launch the first in a series of roadshows.

The event, staged at Williton Fire Station, will be the first opportunity for local people literally to make their mark on the model and say how they would like to see the village develop.

The Williton Parish Plan steering group, which is leading the initiative, was set up last autumn and has since secured almost £5,000 of grand aid from the Countryside Agency.

The plan is expected to take a year to complete and will cover a wide range of topics from housing needs to social, economic and environmental issues.

It will also address the needs of the entire community, including young people, the elderly, disabled and families and special interest groups.

Steering group chairman Elizabeth Peeks said it was vital that the community worked to together to produce the document and that people felt it belonged to them.

"We hope that as many people as possible will come to Saturday's event to help provide us with the information we need."

Organisers are offering a special launch date incentive for people to fill in a short questionnaire that accompanies the model - the chance to win a hamper of fresh fruit.

The model, based on an Ordnance Survey map of the area, depicts Williton's focal points and has been created with the help of children from St Peter's First School and West Somerset Community College student Nick Bigwood.

In the next couple of months, the model will go on display at venues including schools, Williton Hospital and West Somerset District Council offices as well as being shown to a host of other local organisations and groups.

The model will be on display at the fire station tomorrow between 10am to 3pm.
