SIR — We are writing in response to the report 'Suspicion of mischief making' (Free Press September 2). We would just like to inform readers that certain parish councillors are making wild and unfounded assumptions about the reasons behind the applications for the tree protection orders which were recently granted by West Somerset District Council on the trees in the Memorial Ground. We are two of the people (not parish councillors) who applied for the orders many months ago, and we are appalled at the suggestion that we may have had ulterior motives for our actions or that we have been influenced by "village hall on the Memorial Ground" supporters. In fact our applications were a direct result of a report regarding the condemned state of the present changing rooms and our fears for the adjacent fine specimen trees should building contractors need access for possible rebuilding and renovation works. Had we had faith in our Parish Council to protect these trees, we would not have felt it necessary to make such an application but unfortunately, as a number of them seem to spend most of their time fighting between themselves instead of fighting for the good of Williton and its community, we felt that we had to take action. It is typical of Cllrs Gulliford and Cleere to see mischief where there is none, therefore causing trouble. This application was made long before any discussion or decision regarding a village hall on the Memorial Ground was even broached and has no bearing on the application. We call on the parish council to stop arguing between themselves and do something constructive for Williton, ie ensuring that Williton's war memorial, grounds and beautiful trees are treated with respect and are not desecrated by the appalling behaviour of certain irresponsible people. This is surely what they were elected to do and not to carry out petty vendettas against each other. Maybe new parish council elections are called for. Names and addresses supplied.
