THERE is a new item on the menu at popular Wiveliscombe pub the Bear - a haircut.

Starting last week, the Bear is now hosting local barber Claire Crocker for a full day of hair cutting and beard trimming.

Owner Jon Coward said the reason for the move was to bring more people to Wiveliscombe on a traditionally subdued day of the week. “Mondays are quiet here - the two cafés are closed, so footfall is down, and we wanted to keep people coming through town.”

However, the Black Bear Barbers service proved so popular on its opening day that it has been immediately extended to three days a week, opening on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week.

Claire, who cuts hair in Wellington during the rest of the week, said: “We just thought it was a really good idea.

“We’re very central here, very close to Wivey’s free car parks, and in between the two schools.

“Otherwise the nearest place to go is Wellington, and that’s not really very convenient.”

The cutting takes place in the pub’s games room, after the pool table is moved out and the proper barber’s chair moved in.

“There is no need to book: simply pop in and see when Claire can fit you in.”
