MINEHEAD Town Council has “shot down dead” the old hospital community hub project and “sent it into limbo land”, former mayor Cllr Terry Venner said this week.

He was one of six town councillors who suffered an eight votes to six defeat when the council refused to support a Minehead Development Trust application for £100,000 of Section 106 grant money for phase one of its plan to create a community hub in the listed old hospital building in The Avenue.

Cllr Venner said that without town council support, the grant application could not progress and the project could be in serious jeopardy.

“I can only think this was a political decision – no council money was involved and the town’s ratepayers would not be affected in any way,” he told the Free Press.

He said there would now be a meeting of the councillors who were in favour of supporting the grant to consider asking for the matter to be put on the agenda of a future meeting – hopefully in April.
