SIR — Minehead Conservation Society totally understands the wide ranging concerns that have been expressed about the possible closure of Minehead’s public toilets. Indeed, the society has already begun petitioning people and has submitted the first 200-plus names calling on West Somerset Council to ‘keep the public toilets open’. More will be following soon.

People wishing to sign the petition can do son in Robin, 13 Parks Street, Sally’s Chic, The Avenue, and other outlets.

Individuals wishing to access a petition form can email [email protected] to ask for one. Completed forms can be dropped in to Townsend House. Alternatively, please lobby your councillor, making your views crystal clear.

Why are public toilets so important in a town like Minehead?

l It is a tourist destination catering for a variety of visitors, e.g. walkers, coach visitors and families.

l It has an ageing population, many of whom suffer from urinary and other problems.

l It is a shopping centre for people feeding into the town via buses and cars from outlying villages, Many require the toilet when arriving or before leaving.

l Visitors arriving from a distance expect toilet facilities where they park. It is often the first visit they make.

l Disabled persons need access to easily accessible toilets within easy reach.

l Young children frequently need the toilet.

l Minehead does not have big stores with multiple toilets.

l No-one should be obliged to buy a coffee in order to use a toilet.

l Many cafés have toilets located up steps or stairways.

What will happen without public toilets? Where will people go? Will a health hazard be caused by people being forced to use inappropriate places? Who will clean this up?

Judging by the response our petition is receiving, the provision of public toilets is a top priority both for residents and visitors and a service they consider should be provided. We urge people to continue registering their objection to these proposed cuts. It is vital that we impress upon our elected members which services we want our rates to fund.

Chairman,
