SIR — I have never been in one to write to the papers but I believe that every person that has been killed in any conflict should be honoured.

This sad idea to place a memorial at the side of the library in Watchet should be seen as an insult to all of the services. This memorial should be placed in the middle of the Esplanade where everyone can honour our troops.

I find this idea of the council to hide away any memorials as disgusting. The only visible memorial I know of is at Bilbrook. Even the Burma Star Association memorial has been hidden away by the ladies toilets in Blenheim Gardens.

Why is it that if you go to a lot of European countries, France in particular, there is a memorial in most towns usually in the town centre in pride of place and honoured?

It is bad enough that our troops do not get the equipment and respect they deserve without dishonouring them in death.  I don't care what the council thinks, it is what WE think that matters as residents. I have heard that one counciller has said 'we dont want it'.  Well who do these people think they are?
