SIR - Re Bruce Williams' letter (Free Press May 1), he mentions idiotic and dangerous pursuits on the A39 - the words pot, black and kettle spring to mind.

Does he really think that placing a wheelbarrow on the highway isn't dangerous?

It is an offence to place any object on the highway and this stupidity could have cost any road user theirs or their families' lives.

All of the rally drivers are warned in writing to obey the highway codes and all of the cars are sound and emissions scrutineered. The drivers are implicitly told that speed traps will be used.

As for the pot holes and troughs,r ally cars have high grade suspension units that are capable of driving over rough terrain at well over 100mph, so a little pothole wouldn't be noticed. It sounds like he was driving in excessive speeds for his car to fall apart.

The rally to many locals and people from far and wide is one of the very few things that happen in West Somerset. Even more, it's free to spectators.

It's about time we were put on the map, and I am also sure that local businesses welcomed the extra income in these hard times from the drivers, co-drivers, crews and everyone else involved.

As for ruining Exmoor, the stages used are graded and re-stoned every year to bring them back to a good standard.

I didn't see any litter on any of the stages, not even a wheelbarrow. Most people have a lot of respect for the countryside.

Re the beer festival, it causes so many problems to the locals that I didn't know one even existed, but now I do I will certainly attend it.

Mr Williams also speaks of not wanting a Disneyland here. I thought we had a mini one called Butlins.

It seems this person wants to upset everyone in his path and moan about everything, no doubt we will hear that there are too many green fields in West Somerset and suggestions of more concrete to be installed.
