SIR — After listening intently to West Somerset Council's planning committee meeting on July 28, I wish to thank Cllr Anthony Trollope-Bellew for voting against the site preparation works application.
He wasn't bowed by the pressure of central government or blinded by the pound signs. He did what he thought was right and proper, given the uncertainty that surrounds the eventual building, or not, of Hinkley C.
The planning committee showed concern for the residents of Cannington but little for the plight of the hamlets closest to the Hinkley Point site.
Perhaps we would be treated better if we were taken over by Sedgemoor?
Thanks also go to Stogursey Parish Council and WHAG for representing the community. More than one local speaker asked for a 'live' noise monitoring system, to help residents who need to make a complaint to EDF - this was forgotten by the committee when conditions were discussed.
The hamlets have also been forgotten by our MP, who made 'no comment' on this application.
He pledged his support to the hamlets on June 5 2010 and hasn't been seen since - no wonder he is known as Ian Little Stranger!
Richard Mayson asked to be trusted, but EDF have done little to earn this so far. EDF insist they want to be a good neighbour but have yet to prove it.
So Shurton, Burton, Knighton, Wick and Stolford are left to fend for themselves - already houses are unsalable and what if living here becomes unbearable?
Our only hope is a voluntary EDF Neighbourhood Support Scheme and EDF have yet to include all hamlet properties, as they stated they would.
When Hergen Haye visited the hamlets he described us as 'a community in grief' - we now know he was right.
Sue Jones,
Burton.
