THOSE who struggle with get-up-and-go can take inspiration from Mimi Vallas who works out twice a week at the Exmoor Fitness Centre in Dulverton – at the age of 94.

Mimi walks with a stick but still cycles on the spinning bike, pounds the treadmill and uses the weight machines as part of her twice-weekly routine.

And sometimes she walks to the centre from her residential home in the town if the weather allows it.

Mimi finds the regular exercise gives her a positive mental attitude and she enjoys keeping active: “I am very lucky, but sometimes you can think yourself old and you are not old.

“It is important to get out and keep moving. It’s very motivating and helps the brain as well as the body.”

Mimi was referred to the Exmoor Fitness Centre by her GP as part of the Wellness Works scheme following two operations on her legs.

“I don’t overdo it at the gym,” she said.

“I stop if I get too tired and the gym staff are very helpful with advice about how much to do, but it has made a great difference to me and helps me to stay active.”

Amanda Godsell, 1610 health development manager, said that Mimi is an inspiration to others, especially the elderly.

“A gym or fitness centre is not just about losing pounds or inches but keeping your mind active and positive and enjoying social interaction,” she said.

“This is so important for retired or older people who may feel lonely or isolated. There is a lot of support and advice available from our staff on how to exercise.

“The Wellness Works scheme makes exercise more accessible for those with a health issue. It can also be rewarding to be part of a local community, coming into the gym regularly where people know you and where you will be guaranteed a warm welcome.”

The Exmoor Fitness Centre is also extending its opening hours on Fridays from 4.30pm to 7.30pm
