CAFE owner Sylvia Jeromson is preparing to strip off and become a calendar pin-up in a fundraising effort in memory of former Watchet woman Lorraine Bissell. Sylvia, who runs the Glenmore Café in the town, is sponsoring the production of an 'alternative' calendar in the style of the Rylstone and District branch of the Women's Institute, on which the hit movie Calendar Girls was based. "It will be very tasteful," Sylvia told the Free Press this week. "It will feature men and women who will be photographed in various locations in Watchet." All the money raised from the calendar will go towards a £27,000 campaign to boost the funds of Cancer Research UK by family and friends of Lorraine, who died aged just 27 last November. Former West Somerset Community College pupil Lorraine, whose parents Joyce and Martin live in Watchet, died within two hours of being told she had terminal cancer of the liver and pancreas. Three weeks earlier, she had been enjoying a family holiday in Portugal and had only fallen ill a week after a return. Lorraine's devastated family, including her brothers Jason and Shane, are still struggling to come to terms with their loss. Lorraine, who had a degree in textile and fashion design, had been living in Chester for the past couple of years where she trained and was working as a nursery nurse - fulfilling her ambition to work with children. Her nursery colleagues have joined in the fundraising and a memorial bench has also been installed in the nursery grounds. Fundraising efforts so far have brought in around £10,000 and one of Lorraine's brothers will be taking part in the New York marathon in November. Photographs for the calendar will be snapped at the end of this month and Sylvia hopes it will be on sale by November. She has already persuaded ten local people to hide their blushes and sign up as pin-ups but is looking for a further six to take part. "The photographer has suggested we need around 16 people because some might change their minds when they see the pictures," she said. "It's such a good cause that I hope we will get plenty of volunteers. The cafe will pay for all the production costs so everything we raise from the sale of the calendar will go towards the fundraising campaign." Sylvia can be contacted on 01984 633477.
