STOGUMBER First School pupils showed that problem-solving was as easy as one, two, three when they came top in a challenge designed to test their maths skills. The youngsters pitted their skills against other teams of four from Old Cleeve, St Peter's in Williton, Knights Templar in Watchet and Crowcombe. The were all set eight problem-solving challenges, using a mixture of clues and points in the race to the mathematical winning post. The challenge was spearheaded by the West Somerset Initiative as part of the Primary Strategy Learning Network, which in this area is focusing on maths. Held at Danesfield Community Middle School in Williton, the challenge was co-ordinated by Danesfield assistant headteacher Nicola Darby, with help from Bryan White from Stogumber First School and Danesfield's head of maths Greg Mockridge. And year six pupils from Danesfield also played a part by helping out the pupils from the first schools, who all received a certificate in recognition of their efforts. The winning team - pictured, from the left, Michelle Garwood, Emma Chown, Scott Howe and Julian Harding - was presented with a box of chocolates, with each member also receiving a calculator.
