SIR — Oh dear! I was afraid that, lacking any political argument, Brexit supporters such as Thelma Frost (Your Letters, April 15) might resort to mud-slinging.

No, Thelma, neither I nor my family lack patriotism and love of our country. My father served in the First World Wa, my two brothers in the Second and I in Korea. In fact, it is patriotism that leads me to want to stay in the EU.

Opinion polls show a large majority of Scots in favour of staying in the EU. Nicola Sturgeon has indicated that, in the event of us leaving the EU, the Scots will not be dragged with us and will vote for independence. So leaving the EU means the break-up of the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile your correspondent J M Davis states that we are a “lawless society showing a complete loss of respect for others and the law” and claims that leaving the EU will solve this. Where the logic of that statement comes from I am at a loss to understand.

He also states we would survive our exit from the EU “through our optimism and unfettered belief in ourselves”. These are excellent qualities but specific facts would be more convincing for me.

As for all the sources I quoted, he claims they have a vested interest. How is this true for Professor Hawking, the Bank of England and the London School of Economics?

Meanwhile the facts continue to grow. Brexit would mean less money for the NHS (four former Secretaries of State for Health in a letter to the Guardian). Three-quarters of the finance chiefs in the Deloitte survey said they would prefer the UK to stay in Europe. Lloyd members said Brexit would be ’bad for the market.’ Brexit would deter EU students from attending British universities and damage the economy (universities UK).

There has been reference to the facts considering exit from the EU as ’Project Fear’. I view the attitude of those who wish us to leave as ’Project Fantasy.’

John Gamlin,

Porlock.
