THE maximum fare rate for taxis in Somerset is rising from September 19 for the first time in more than two years.

It follows a Somerset Council consultation earlier this year which saw responses from nearly 150 companies and vehicle owners.

Of those responding, 58 per cent said current fares did not reflect their operating costs, with 43 per cent saying existing fares were not ‘financially sustainable’.

The average cost of a two-mile journey in Somerset is currently £7.60, above the England and Wales average of £7.46.

The increase will see the average rise to £8.60.

Council licensing officer John Rendell said operating costs had increased significantly since the maximum rate was last fixed in May, 2024.

Mr Rendell said trade viability needed to be balanced with passenger affordability.
