SOMERSET Council have ditched their plans to enforce new parking restrictions on a key Wiveliscombe road after public opposition.

This follows a request for public comment on proposed Burges Lane restrictions at the end of March.

In an email to Wiveliscombe residents, Somerset Council Traffic Engineer Kate Brown said: “In light of all the objections raised, and in discussion with the developer and our planning team we are no longer proceeding with this Parking Amendment Order.”

In July 2024, it was confirmed that more than 70 homes would be built on the same road

The plans included the upgrading the existing junction of Burges Lane and Luxton Road, with a new T-Junction being created on the northern side of the road, as well as parking space for up to 14 cars.

Commenting on the proposed parking restrictions, Councillor Dave Mansell said: “I objected to the planning application and spoke against it at planning committee last June when the planning approval was given.

“My biggest concern was over the displaced parking and lack of new spaces to compensate.

“It should be noted that the new housing development will include a new parking courtyard for current Burges Lane residents with 14 spaces, but I believe twice that number are needed.”

With the Somerset Council proposals dropped, Burges Lane retains parking capacity for between 24-28 cars.
