TEMPERATURES plummeted in Porlock on Tuesday morning as youngsters arrived to find their school snowbound. The seasonal flurries - which only fell over a tiny part of the village - were the work of an organisation called FROSTS, alias the parent teachers association. But fortunately parents had been warned via a secret letter home that the weather was going to be cold so woolly hats, mittens and scarves were in abundance as the children flung themselves into a frenzy of snowball fights. The winter wonderland turned out to be a huge surprise for pupils, although any thoughts of the village being cut off for Christmas were quickly shelved when headteacher Chris Blazey was spotted at the controls of a snow machine. Jan Rook, head of the school's nursery, said: "Everyone loves a white Christmas, especially children, so we decided to hire a snow machine to guarantee the weather. Teacher Sue Flatley added: "The whole thing was a surprise, hence the secret letter home asking parents not to reveal the weather forecast in advance. "The children couldn't believe their eyes when they arrived at school. The snow was on the ground and up the windows and doors - they loved it." The snow machine was arranged by school caretaker Dave Parkin and was paid for by the appropriately named FROSTS. Photo: Steve Guscott.
