A NEW supported internship programme is launching on Exmoor to create meaningful pathways into employment for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

It is being delivered by a partnership of Somerset Skills and Learning (SS&L), Young Somerset, local employers, and Somerset Council’s ‘Imagine the Possibilities’ initiative.

The supported internship will provide young people aged 16 to 24 years who have an education, health and care plan (EHCP) with real workplace experience across the Exmoor area, alongside tailored learning and personalised support.

The internships are full-time programmes designed to help the young people move into sustainable paid employment or apprenticeships.

Interns spend four days a week in structured work placements with local employers and one day developing their skills with SS&L in West Somerset.

The programme offers opportunities in land-based, digital, and creative roles, reflecting the local economy and community.

Each young person receives support to build practical skills, confidence, and independence, which helps them to take their next step into work.

Alongside hands-on experience in the workplace, interns will develop:

• Sector-specific practical skills

• Core employment skills

• CV writing and interview preparation

• An understanding of workplace rights

• Greater confidence and independence

The focus is on ensuring young people who want to work have the right support to succeed.

Local employers play a central role by offering structured placements and inclusive working environments.

With guidance and practical support from SS&L and Young Somerset, businesses are supported to help interns thrive.

The programme forms part of a wider county-wide commitment through ‘Imagine the Possibilities’ and SS&L to ensure young people across Somerset can access, clear, achievable routes into employment.

Young people, parents and carers, and professionals and employers can register their interest and be the first to hear about upcoming information days by visiting the SS&L website.
