KIND-hearted villagers in Sampford Brett have helped to raise more than £900 for two local good causes.

They turned out in force to take part in an auction to raise money towards the £12,000 cost of repairing the porch and roof at the village's 11th century St George's Church, as well as helping to provide a therapeutic aid for local disabled boy Ashley Luckett.

The auction was overseen by Justin Harris of Chanin and Thomas, while organisers from the parochial church council provided free cream teas.

Among the lots were professional music lessons, fish and chips, cakes and even a pair of ornamental herons.

Other pledges included golf vouchers, family days out and half a lamb.

The auction was held in Sampford Brett Village Hall last Saturday and co-organiser Jennie Elston was thrilled with the response.

"Not only did people donate, but many also bid and raised a staggering £900 which will be split between the village church and Ashley," she said.
