LIBRARY users in Minehead are getting to grips with new technology following a major refurbishment of the town's facility.

Minehead has followed in the footsteps of seven of Somerset's busiest libraries by installing self-service equipment.

Users can now borrow and return books, DVDs and other materials using self-service kiosks, aimed at reducing queues and freeing up staff for other tasks.

Coffee and cakes were on offer when the library reopened after a month-long closure.

And the ribbon was cut by Minehead's county councillor Terry Venner, with the help of Cllr Christine Lawrence, who represents the Dunster division and is the cabinet member for health and well-being.

In addition to the installation of new technology, the library has been given a makeover, with new shelving carpets and blinds, as well as complete redecoration.

Minehead Register Office has also relocated to the new-look library and is open on Tuesdays from 9am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 3pm, and Thursdays from 9am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 3pm.

Appointments can be made by phoning 01643 703219.
