I am, of course, relieved beyond measure that the West Somerset Railway is “back from the precipice of insolvency”, as reported by the new WSR plc chairman Jonathan Pratt-Jones (Free Press March 8).
However, this has been at a very high price. A number of loyal members of staff have lost their jobs, but it seems to many of us who volunteer on the line that the real culprits have not paid the price.
The railway has a suffered a “perfect storm” of problems with the railways regulator, the ORR, an out of control wage bill and lacklustre financial performance.
This all points to incompetent senior management over quite a number of years. And yet the senior management are still in place, not earning their high salaries.

You might have thought responsible senior management would have had the honour to resign, but it seems not.
Let’s hope the 2019 season is a cracking one and that we end it with better management than we start. Come on, Jonathan Pratt-Jones, finish the job!
