SIR — I refer to the report in last week's Free Press concerning the proposed Williton Village Hall.

The continued use of the word "track" by members of the village hall committee (who are also memorial ground trustees) to describe the vehicular access route that they propose to construct around Williton Memorial Ground is, I consider, a deliberate attempt to mislead the public as to their intentions.

This access route would have to be of adequate size and construction to carry not only service deliveries such as a fuel oil tanker, but emergency vehicles up to and including a full-sized fire engine with a 12.5 tonne axle load.

This so-called "track" would be a fully-fledged road.

Cllr Peeks refers to the "approval in principle" given by the trustees some years ago but this was for a motorised disabled vehicle access route only - not a road.

I note that Cllr Hooper appears to be raising old issues with regard to the referendum that the village hall committee held nearly three years ago.

She suggests that the vote over the location of the hall be re-run, at public expense, but this time to include a third option of constructing the hall elsewhere.

As Cllr Vaughan pointed out at the trustees' meeting, suitable access to the memorial ground is unlikely to be possible so "elsewhere" is the only option left.

There is no need for a public vote to decide this and we are pleased to see that other councillors saw sense and voted against wasting public money on resurrecting the issue.

In a separate report in last week's Free Press concerning the changing rooms on the memorial ground, you report that the parish council spent around £30,000 on refurbishment.

I belive that in fact the County Youth Service provided a large proportion of the money spent.

As reported, the improvement plan was only partially implemented with the result that the money spent was largely wasted.

The Friends of the Memorial Ground would be pleased to join Williton Football Club in offering practical assistance to now complete the work to install the insulation, ventilation and background heating that was previously omitted in a misguided attempt to save money.
