SIR — May I strongly support Mr Walker's suggestion that the district council should do all it can to bring about the extension to Taunton of the West Somerset Railway (Your Letters July 1). This line is a major transport facility for West Somerset and it is not being fully used at present. The West Somerset Railway Co, with whom I have corresponded, seems surprisingly lukewarm about the extension to Taunton, although I believe it may be one of the objectives contained in its Memorandum of Association. It argues that there is no demand for a service from Minehead to Taunton. Even if that is true, which I doubt, it is unlikely to remain so for much longer. Any prospect of improving substantially the road links to Taunton and Bridgwater seem remote and, because of the continued increase in the volume of traffic, they are likely to become increasingly congested, particularly in the section between Minehead and Williton. I strongly urge the district council to enter into discussions with the railway company to see how they can best assist in bringing about the extension to Taunton. The future for West Somerset requires that there should be an alternative mode of transport from Minehead to Taunton. Roy Bartlett, Benares Court, Northfield Road, Minehead.
