ROBERT Stiby, the chairman of Mirage FM, one of the main contenders for the forthcoming local radio licence for Yeovil and district, met Yeovil MP David Laws at the Liberal Club on Friday.
Mr Stiby, whose great, great uncle Henry Stiby, was an Alderman and Mayor of Yeovil in the early 1900s, is chairman of Tindle Radio, who own six local radio stations in the UK and Channel Islands.
Mr Stiby outlined the type of programming envisaged by Mirage FM, who were the first to campaign for a radio station for the Yeovil district. Mr Laws said he was very much in favour of local radio and had been pressing The Radio Authority to advertise the licence as soon as possible. This is expected to happen later this month.
Other known candidates for the licence are Yeovil and District Radio (YDRfm) and Merlin Radio. Whoever, wins the licence, it is expected the radio station will be on air by this time next year.
