HAVE you ever wanted to step back in time to the 17th century?
Dunster Castle are inviting history-lovers to experience Dunster during the English Civil War as Taunton Garrison bring drama and atmosphere back to the castle grounds.
From Saturday, March 14, to Sunday, March 15, costumed interpreters will be roaming the upper castle grounds in authentic 17th-century dress, bringing the story of the ‘Siege of Dunster’ to life, re‑creating key moments from the conflict, including the surrender of the castle.
Visitors can expect to encounter soldiers, camp followers and characters from the period who lived and served at Dunster Castle when it was under threat.
A spokesperson for Dunster Castle and Watermill, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for families, history enthusiasts, and curious visitors alike to step back in time and experience the castle as it might have been during one of its most defining eras.”
Dunster Castle has existed since at least Norman times, with an impressive medieval gatehouse and ruined tower giving a reminder of its turbulent history.
The castle also hosts a terraced garden which displays varieties of mediterranean and subtropical plants while the tranquil riverside wooded garden below, with its natural play area, leads to the historic working watermill.
Taunton Garrison will be offering a glimpse into life at Dunster during the siege from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue.
Routes are steep and feature numerous steps, slopes and uneven surfaces.
There are designated Blue Badge parking in the main car park and a courtesy bus with wheelchair lift also available to bring visitors up to Green Court from the car park.
