NIMBLE-FINGERED needlewomen have been using their talents to help a charitable cause. A dozen members of the Old Cleeve Quilters Club have spent the last eight months creating a double- sized quilt which will now be raffled to boost the funds of the West Somerset Carriage Driving for the Disabled. Club spokesman Diane Ballinger said last year the quilters had made a similar quilt which had raised around £700 for Cancer Research. "We like to do something to help the community once a year," she said. "We only meet once a month, so it does take quite a while." Barbara De'ath of the West Somerset Carriage Driving for the Disabled said the quilt would be raffled at the organisation's summer fair at Lowood, Roadwater, on August 14. But tickets, priced £1, are available before then from Mrs De'ath on 01984 640271. "We're very grateful to the quilters. The money raised will go into general funds to help with our upkeep costs. "We've been quite successful in attracting grant aid for specific things but it is difficult to raise money for the ordinary things, like a bale of hay or shoeing."
