"A GLORIOUS event" is how the chairman of Porlock Carnival Committee described this year's annual procession which featured everything from pink fashionitas to cricket-playing ducks. More than £1,600 was raised for local charities and good causes on the night, with more money still being collected. The procession was led by the town crier John Stenner followed by local firefighters and the carnival queen and princesses Emma Kingdom, Ami Atkins and Cody Little. There were stilt walkers, a pipe band, majorettes and a samba band as well as a myriad of floats and walking entries. Committee chairman David Hancock said: "We were blessed with good weather and many visitors coming to our thriving village. "The general feedback over the past few days has been excellent, with many saying it was the best carnival for many a year. "That makes the hard work put in by the committee, volunteers and helpers all worth while - but, of course, a huge thank you must go to the participants in the carnival. "Without their support, imagination and enthusiasm, it would just not happen." The carnival was followed by a presentation in the village hall and a disco. The top honours for best in carnival went to small Bridgwater club, Unicorn CC and their tribute to the centenary of the start of the First World War. Their float was also deemed to be the best adult float, beating a similar-themed entry from Porlock Visitor Centre into second place. Residents from Healeys came third with their entry Away with the Fairies. A young team from the Top Ship hoisted the Skull and Crossbones to take the title of best junior float while the Great British Sewing Bee was given a twist by Chris Miles of Beehive Haberdashery to win best individual adult entry. Pampered Poodle Benita was the best individual under 16 with Ashton Pope while feathered cricketers from Lastminute.com won best adult waking group and best comical with Out for a Duck. Other top awards went to Porlock Churches Together, Healeys, Porlock Visitor Centre Results in this week's Free Press.
