WEST Somerset firefighters were mobilised when a car caught alight on the Porlock to Lynton road on Sunday afternoon (December 28).

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue’s control room received several 999 calls about the incident on the A39 shortly before 1.45 pm.

A Porlock Fire Station crew responded and on reaching the scene near Oare confirmed the vehicle was already well alight.

They used a hose reel jet to put out the flames and then waited for Somerset highways engineers to attend to inspect damage caused to the road surface.

The incident happened not far from the scene where two people had to be rescued by fire crews when strong winds during Storm Bram tipped over a Luton-style van in early December.
