THE fourth anniversary of Porlock Repair Café will be marked in the village hall next week in the knowledge that more than 80 per cent of the 1,400 items brought in since 2022 have been given a new and useful life by its 15 volunteer handymen and women.
A spokesperson said: “Probably the most unusual thing we have mended is a full size Dalek head - its lights and sound had failed.
“But, our main work is on normal day-to-day items like hoovers, kettles, toasters, lamps, sewing repairs, and sharpening a variety of items.
“Overall, we have saved 1.75 tons of goods from being thrown away.
“All electrical items have a portable appliances electrical test (PAT) before being returned to their owner, to ensure their safety.
“Our repairers can tackle most items and we would love to try and restore an item for you, or at least confirm it is time to let it go for something new.
“We do not have any set charges for repairs, it is donations-based on what customers think the service has been worth.”
Most of the repair café work involves clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, toys, tools, welding, silver-soldering, clocks, phones, and electronic goods.
Anybody who is unsure whether an item can be repaired and wants to check before taking it to the café can email the details to [email protected].
After the fourth anniversary session on March 28, the repair café will open again from 10 am to 12 noon on April 25, May 30, June 27, July 25, and August 29.
“Actually, we have a few people who come in just for the homemade cakes and a chat with friends.”
